What Is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a primary healthcare system combining clinical diagnosis and manual treatment. It is particularly concerned with how different structures such as bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, discs and nerves relate to each other. It is suitable for all ages, and can help ease the symptoms of an enormous range of conditions.

Osteopathy is not only beneficial for people suffering from acute and chronic pain, but can also maintain a healthy approach to life. Each patient is assessed as an individual and once diagnosed, a personal treatment plan is formulated including advice for future prevention of the problem.

Patients range from the very young to the elderly, including manual workers, office professionals, pregnant women and sports people. They seek treatment for a wide variety of conditions including back pain, repetitive strain injury, postural changes due to pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries.

The National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends manual therapy such as osteopathy as a treatment option for low back pain.

All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council which sets and promotes high standards of competency, conduct and safety.
